Memphis, then SEMO, now Shawnee for Bell City star Bogan

New 8.7.08

Former Bell City all-state center Will Bogan's next stop: the Shawnee Community College basketball team.

Shawnee coach John Sparks said in a published report today that Bogan, a 6-foot-10 center and former all-state player from Bell City, has signed to play at the junior college in the upcoming season.

Bogan, who was about to start his sophomore year at Southeast Missouri State, was academically ineligible for the first semester of the basketball season. There was speculation that Southeast coach Scott Edgar withdrew Bogan's scholarship over concerns about Bogan's future eligibility.

Sparks said Bogan, although still listed on Southeast's online basketball roster for 2008-'09, has already taken classes and trained on the Shawnee campus in Ullin, Ill. Bogan will join D.D. Gillespie, a Scott County Central grad who earlier signed to play at Shawnee. The season will open Oct. 7 with an exhibition game in Vincennes, Ind.

Bogan averaged seven points and almost four rebounds per game for Southeast last season, but the Redhawks were Bogan's second Division I choice. He previously committed to Memphis before coach John Calipari later declined to extend a scholarship offer. Bogan committed to Southeast in April 2007.

Southeast faces new NCAA investigation

New 8.12.08

Southeast's basketball program is again under investigation by the NCAA, but this time focus is on the men's team and another former coach.

Just less than a year after the NCAA revealed a list of punishments for the women's program and former coach B.J. Smith, the school said Tuesday that it is being investigated again.

One violation, according to a one-page release from the school, stems from the earlier investigation of the program. "As a follow-up to the NCAA investigation of the women's and men's basketball programs that has previously been reported, new information has been developed," the release said.

The school declined further comment until the NCAA issues a formal letter of allegations.

The second violation involves former coach Gary Garner and three athletes who were ineligible to compete but traveled free with the team over a two-year period. The university imposed its own sanctions for the 2006-'07 season and paid a fine of about $12,600, but that investigation remains ongoing because Garner has filed an appeal with the NCAA.

The previous investigation of Southeast lasted from late 2006 to October 2007 and resulted in the school's loss of 79 wins and its NCAA Tournament appearance in March 2006.
