Sikeston won 73-47 at home against Kennett to clinch a first-place tie in the SEMO Conference with Jackson; both finished 8-1 in the league.

At Sikeston, the Bulldogs used a 15-0 run in the second quarter to pull away from what had been a seven-point margin.

Vashon scandal costs SEMO one of its sophomore reserves

New 2.19.08

The scandal that could cost Vashon High School several of its state championships now has cost the Southeast men's basketball team one of its reserves.

Sophomore Johnny Hill will be ineligible to play for the Redhawks during the school's review of comments made by his former coach, Floyd Irons. Irons told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for its Sunday edition that he rented an apartment for Alton, Ill., brothers Johnny and Bobby Hill while they attended Vashon. Johnny Hill graduated in 2005, and Bobby graduated in 2006. They won two state championships while they attended Vashon.

Hill has played in 51 games and averaged 1.7 points and 2.1 rebounds this season.

At issue is whether the Hills amateur status remains intact because they received payment, in this case free housing from Irons. Jayson Santos, Southeast's assistant athletic director in charge of eligibility, said that Hill and his brother Bobby, who plays at Illinois State, could be ruled permanently ineligible. Neither brother has publicly confirmed Irons' claim, but if they're found guilty of receiving improper gifts, punishment could vary greatly.

"But I have a bad feeling, I'll tell you that much," Santos told the Post-Dispatch for a story Tuesday.
