Charges await three East Carter County basketball players
New 7.05.07
Charges of abuse could be filed within days against three East County Carter boys basketball players.

The three 17-year-olds are cited in a report filed by the Independence County (Ark.) Sheriff's Department. According to a news release issued by the sheriff's office, several 13- and 14-year-old basketball players were subjected to hazing incidents during a basketball camp in early June in Batesville, Ark. Some of the events were recorded on video by a student's cell phone camera. Twenty-two basketball players from East Carter County attended the camp.

Scott Central says it's looking for new basketball coach
New 7.09.07
David Heeb, who spent recent months battling recruiting allegations and a state-mandated suspension at his alma mater, won't return to his job as boys basketball coach at Scott County Central.

Heeb was reassigned to another job within the district, according to a source close to the school. Administrators there couldn't be reached to confirm the change Monday. An online job posting advertised an opening for boys basketball coach and athletic director, positions held by Heeb.

Heeb coached Scott Central's 2005-06 team to a 15-14 record in his first season with the Braves, but he was suspended for the final half of last season by the MSHSAA for violation's of the state's undue influence regulations. Heeb chose to sit out the entire season and hasn't coached a varsity game from the bench since the Braves' final game in February 2006. Before coming to Scott Central, he coached Bell City to five state championships and a fourth-place finish over five seasons.

Heeb was replaced on the Scott Central bench last season by former coach Ronnie Cookson, who led the team to a 24-5 finish and No. 4 ranking in the SemoSportsWeb.com Top 20.

Heeb finished as SCC coach? Maybe, maybe not
New 7.13.07
Written comments this week by Scott County Central superintendent Joel Holland raises new questions about the school's future with basketball coach and athletic director David Heeb.

Holland, in his first public comments about what appeared to be a demotion earlier this month of Heeb, wrote in a letter to the Southeast Missourian newspaper that the positions of boys basketball coach, girls basketball coach, track coach and athletic director all have been opened for applications, but that "there was no final decision to hire, fire, promote or discipline" Heeb.

Holland didn't specify whether Heeb might in fact remain in those roles, and Holland and other school officials have shied away from repeated media inquiries all week. He said in the letter that Heeb "was expressly informed in the spring that only his employment contract for teaching was renewed. The Scott County Central Board of Education did not act on any contracts for extra duties, such as coaching, in the spring. Mr. Heeb was further notified at that time that contracting for extra duties would not take place until later in the year."

Heeb told the newspaper that he was never aware that he might not be retained for those jobs and has not heard from Holland about his job status.

New 7.21.07
Terry Gray of Bartlett, Tenn., led all 25 laps to win Friday's special event for the touring United Sprint Car Series at Malden Speedway.

Gray started outside of the front row next to Steve Short of Farmington and led every lap. Tim Montgomery of Fredricktown started fifth and followed Gray across the finish line. Wade Oliver of Southaven, Miss., got the other podium spot in third place. Short raced home in fourth. Raymond Stull of Coldwater, Miss., rounded out the top five.

Cookson takes Scott Co. Central basketball job
New 7.24.07
Ronnie Cookson has been hired to coach the Scott County Central boys basketball team for a second time, ending David Heeb's tumultuous two-year stay with the program.

Cookson, who coached the team from 1970 to 1995 before retiring, filled in last season while Heeb served a state-mandated suspension for violating the MSHSAA's undue influence rule. The Braves went 24-5 and pushed Cookson's career record to 660 wins and 137 losses, which includes 12 state titles.

Superintendent Joel Holland said Heeb — who coached Bell City to state championships in 2002 and '04 before being hired by his alma mater — will remain in the school district in a teaching position. Heeb and Holland have openly disagreed about the nature of Heeb's firing from the coaching and athletic director jobs; Holland said the positions were opened to applicants months ago, while Heeb said he learned of his firing in the past two weeks.
