archives July 2008 SEMO's Smith short of Olympic berth New 7.2.08 Former Southeast sprinter Miles Smith finished 12th in the 400 meter dash at the Olympic trials Monday, ending a run toward a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. Smith finished four spots short of qualifying for a spot on the team. He finished sixth in his heat at 46.32 behind winner Jeremy Wariner (44.66). A five-time All-American at Southeast, Smith will now join the professional track circuit in Europe beginning in early August. Capahas roll into league world series New 7.7.08 The Cape Girardeau Capahas sealed their 27th straight trip to the NBC World Series with a 15-0 win Sunday over Pine Bluff, Ark., in the league's regional championship. The Capahas advanced to the tournament in Wichita, Kan., after banging out 15 hits in a shortened game. Josh Eftink was 4-for-4, including a three-run home run in the eighth inning. Jerry Hodges had three hits, and Tom Bolen, Asif Shah and Daniel Schuh all had two apiece. The NBC World Series opens Aug. 1 and ends Aug. 15. The bracket has not been determined. Racer's win gives family a rare feat at Benton New 7.14.08 Ricky Stenhouse Jr. won Friday's feature race for sprints at Benton Racepark, giving the Olive Branch, Miss., family a rare feat at the 17-year-old track. Stenhouse, 20, becomes the first sprint competitor to join his father as winners in the track's premiere division. The elder Stenhouse won five events at the track, including his last one in April 1993. Other winners Friday were Robert Powers in modified, Mark Todd in pure street, and Tim Borgfield in pro four. Kaverman has eyes on job in Michigan New 7.16.08 Southeast athletic director Don Kaverman is among three candidates who will interview this week for the vacant AD job at Ferris State, a Division II school in Big Rapids, Mich. Kaverman and two others finalists are a part of on-site interviews and public forums this week. The other two candidates are Rob Barnhill, AD at Division III Concordia, and Jon Coles, AD at Big Rapids High School. Kaverman, who has held the Southeast AD position for 10 years and whose contract expires in June 2009, supervised the sports medicine program at Ferris State from 1980 to 1986. More than 50 people applied for the job. Kaverman pulls name from Ferris State job search New 7.20.08 Southeast athletic director Don Kaverman has withdrawn as a candidate for a position at Ferris State University in Michigan. Kaverman said in a published report that the job at the Division III school is "just not the right thing for me now." He was one of three finalists for the job, each of whom interviewed on campus last week. Kaverman said he withdrew from the job search before knowing whether he would be offered the job. Kaverman is in his 10th year at athletic director at Southeast. His contract expires in June 2009. SEMO coach says no to Utah job offer New 7.21.08 Tom Farden has declined an offer from Utah State to be its new gymnastics coach. Farden, the Southeast Missouri State University gymnastics coach, recently completed his sixth season with the Redhawks program. In the last three years, Farden has led his team to two NCAA South Central Regional Championships and finished the past season ranked No. 30 nationally. Farden and assistant coaches from Nebraska and North Carolina all have declined offers to replace Ray Corn, who has retired after 31 seasons at Utah State. JeffCo leaders lay out plan for new high school New 7.22.08 Jefferson County school officials have hired former Cape Girardeau Central athletic director Mark Ruark as principal for a new high school scheduled to open next year. County school superintendent Tom Guenzler said in a published report today that the district will open the new school next year regardless of the outcome of a special ballot issue Aug. 5. That vote will determine whether $11 million in bonds will be used to build a new facility on Highway 61 or to upgrade Danby-Rush Tower Middle School to accomodate grades 8-12. Sports programs are expected to be in place in time for the freshman class. Varsity sports are projected to begin once the freshman class advances to the 12th grade. The hiring of Ruark comes after he announced his resignation in February after 23 years as Central's AD. His final day was July 1. Midwest title trek starts for Babe Ruth teams New 7.24.08 Teams from seven states set out on a four-day chase for a Senior Babe Ruth World Series berth starting Friday in Charleston. Charleston, the Farmington-based MABA Pirates and six state champions from Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska and North Dakota compete with four games today in the Midwest Plains Regional at Hillshouse Park. Four games follow Saturday with four more Sunday, leading up to Monday's championship at 2 p.m. On Friday, MABA plays the Iowa state champion at 1:30. Charleston plays the Nebraska state champion at 8. Charleston closes in on spot in Babe Ruth World Series New 7.28.08 Charleston will play on its home field at 2 p.m. today for a shot in the Senior Babe Ruth World Series. Charleston, the Missouri state champion, will meet the winner of today's early Kansas-Nebraska game at 2 p.m. at Hillhouse Park. Charleston advances to the national event in Newark, Ohio, with a win today. Charleston takes an unbeaten tournament record into today's game after winning three in a row. The latest: an 8-4 win Sunday over the Kansas state champion. Tyler Whybark pitched the win and gave up two earned runs on seven hits over seven innings. Blake Gaddis was 2-for-4, and Matt Medlock was 2-for-2. Legion zone field awaits Thursday openers New 7.29.08 Games start Thursday in the three-day American Legion zone tournament at Perryville, one of four around the state. Top-seeded Dunklin County has a first-round bye and will play Friday against either Perryville or Eureka, which meet at 5 p.m. Thursday. In Thursday's other game, Festus will play Anheuser-Busch of St. Louis at 8. Second-round games are Friday with the championship bracket final at 7 p.m. Saturday. A winner-take-all game will be at 1 p.m. Sunday if necessary. The zone winner will advance to the state tournament Aug 7-9 in Washington, Mo. State winners move on to the regional round. The national tournament begins Aug. 22 in Shelby, N.C. Admission is $4 per day or $10 for a three-day pass. MABA 10-year-olds reach Cal Ripken World Series New 7.30.08 The Mineral Area 10-year-old all-star team will play in the World Series in Abbeville, La., after clinching the Midwest Region title Monday. The MABA team, playing in Burlington, Colo., scored six runs in the fourth inning, then added four more in the seventh to clinch the title. Drew Harlow had four hits, and Jake Bridges and Logan Winder each had three. MABA will play host Abbeville at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 8. Charleston Babe Ruth seals trip to World Series New 7.30.08 Charleston earned a trip to Ohio for spot in the Senior Babe Ruth World Series after an 8-7 win Tuesday over Galena, Kan., in the Midwest Plains Regional final in Charleston. The host Squirrels took a 4-3 lead on Zach Rowland's two-run double in the fifth inning and never trailed again. After the double by Rowland (pictured), Charleston scored four more in the sixth on a bunt by Jarryd Smith, a triple by Colin Gilolly and a sacrifice fly by Blake Gaddis. Galena scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Charleston will play three games in pool play, with pool winners advancing to a single-elimination bracket. Charleston will play Licking Co., Ohio, at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 8, then will play the Pacific Southwest Region winner at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 9, and finally will face the Southeast Region winner at 11 a.m. Aug. 10. |
