Almost 70 entries and a near-capacity crowd watched Fredericktown Raceway stage its first dirt-track racing events Friday since closing in 2004.

East Carter County athletes face hazing claims
New 6.26.07
Administrators at East Carter County High School in Ellsinore aren't saying much after allegations of hazing among 22 basketball players at a recent camp in Batesville, Ark.

Police and school officials told reporters Monday that they can't discuss the accusations because those involved are males as young as 13. But the police investigation is focused on allegations of physical abuse and possible sexual abuse at the four-day camp in early June.

"This was really — from what I gather — a hazing episode that maybe went too far, allegedly," school superintendent Tim Hager said. Hager said the issue will be discussed in executive session at a board meeting this week.

Sheriff's office investigating East Carter County accusation
New 6.27.07
East Carter County school officials told a crowd of more than 50 people gathered at a board meeting Tuesday that they're waiting on results from a police investigation into claims of hazing during a recent out-of-town basketball team camp.

School superintendent Tim Hager said authorities in Batesville, Ark., are investigating allegations of abuse among high school athletes during a camp in early June at a college in Batesville; he said the school would not take action until police reports were complete.

Hager said third-year boys basketball coach Benji Stahl has not resigned or been fired. Stahl, an ECC graduate, attended the camp with 22 members of the basketball team.
