archives June 2008 Priday picked in 11th round of MLB Draft New 6.6.08 Sikeston grad Jacob Priday was chosen in the 11th round Friday in the Major League Baseball Draft. Priday, a senior at Missouri, hit .332 with 16 home runs this season. He was a first-team All-Big 12 pick. Priday was picked 332nd overall by Houston. SIU-E officially added as new OVC member New 6.10.08 Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville will be the newest member of the Ohio Valley Conference, the league announced today. SIUE, about 80 miles northeast of St. Louis, is the 11th member of the league following the departure of Samford. The school will officially become a member July 1, and its teams will begin competing in the league as the school completes its reclassification to Division I. All SIUE team sports will begin regular season competition in the OVC during the 2011-12 school year and will be eligible for OVC playoffs in 2012-13. NCAA dishes out penalties against Southeast New 6.18.08 Southeast has formally been penalized by the NCAA for major and secondary violations in its women's and men’s basketball program, the NCAA announced today. Penalties for the violations, including those self-imposed by the institution, include two years of probation, reduction in recruiting, forfeiture of wins, financial penalties and reduction in the number of scholarships. The penalties stem from a lengthy investigation of recruiting violations in the women’s basketball program, primarily involving improper housing, transportation and meals for prospective athletes. More violations involved men’s basketball athletes and impermissible travel expenses. The NCAA also cited a lack of institutional control for the university and its failure to monitor by the former women’s basketball coach B.J. Smith. Among the actions taken by the NCAA and self-imposed actions announced by the school: Sides steps in as new Saxony basketball coach New 6.18.08 Sam Sides has been hired as the Saxony Lutheran boys basketball coach. Sides, who resigned as girls basketball coach at Jackson after the past season, will also be Saxony's athletic director. Former AD Larry Cleair will continue as cross country and track coach. Sides has previous boys coaching experience at Leopold and Meadow Heights. Sikeston racer wins on traveling MASS tour New 6.22.08 Defending Midwest All Star Series champion Jerrod Hull of Sikeston became the first repeat winner of the 2008 tour Saturday by leading every lap at Montgomery County Speedway in New Florence. A.J. Bruns was second with Paul May third and Tyler Thompson of Cape Girardeau fourth. |
