B.J. Smith in line for Wyoming coaching position

New 5.13.08

Former Southeast Missouri women's basketball coach B.J. Smith, whose four-year stay with the school remains at the center of an ongoing NCAA investigation, interviewed Monday to be the new women's coach at Casper College, a junior college near Casper, Wyo.

Smith, who coached the Redhawks to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2006, left the school abruptly before practice begin in November 2006 just before the start of an in-depth NCAA investigation that later turned up a list of violations, including:
  • Improper transportation of prospective players from airports on official visits
  • Prospects receiving summer lodging without paying rent or paying an inappropriate amount
  • Members of the women's staff observing summer workouts of prospective and enrolled athletes

  • An initial NCAA ruling calls for stripping away all 79 wins and the NCAA Tournament appearance under Smith.

Smith, among four candidates for the Casper job, told the Casper Star-Tribune for today's editions that he filed an appeal to the NCAA's findings and expects results in June or July.

"There's tons of lessons (and) things where you look back and say you should have done this differently or that differently," Smith said. "I've grown as a person and it wasn't an enjoyable experience, but it'll make me better as a person.

"I will absolutely never get back what I've lost as far as reputation and perception — it'll take me years to overcome that," Smith said. "I talk to our kids about learning to handle failure (and) learning to get knocked down and get back up. And this is just one of those life lessons."

Members of the school's search committee said they did their homework on Smith and knew of the allegations before Monday's interview. Three more candidates will interview this week.

"No question, B.J.'s resume just pops out," Casper athletic director Bill Landen said. "He's obviously coached at a very high level."

    Casper was 16-7 last season.

    Bogan ineligible for fall semester

Will Bogan is expected to miss the first several games of his sophomore season after he was ruled ineligible this week.

Redhawks coach Scott Edgar confirmed in a posted media report today and later in a published newspaper story. Edgar did not speculate on Bogan's eligibility for the second semester; he can attend summer school in an attempt to boost his grades and retain his eligibility after Jan. 1.

Bogan, a Bell City High grad, averaged 7 points and shot 57 percent from the field as a freshman. His eligibility issue follows a string of shaky news for the Redhawks: Jujuan Maxwell missed last season because of a knee injury and recently underwent surgery; Roderick Pearson left the team after scoring in double figures last season; and the eligibility of high school recruit Martino Brock is in question because of issues involving the status of his Nashville prep school.

In addition, recruiting coordinator Ronnie Dean was fired following a season in which the Redhawks lost 14 of their final 15 games.
