NMCC seals district title; Fredericktown ends with a loss

New Madrid County Central will play in the sectional round of the high school football playoffs after knocking off Dexter in the final Thursday night of the regular season, but Fredericktown will head into the playoffs on the heels of its first loss of the season.

At New Madrid, host NMCC cruised to a 36-14 win in the Class 3 district finale to cap an 8-1 regular season and earn a sectional game at home Wednesday against Fredericktown, which lost 33-31 Thursday to MAFC rival Park Hills Central.

At West Plains, Poplar Bluff lost 21-6 in a game that sends the host Zizzers into the Class 4 sectional round Wednesday against Festus, which slipped past DeSoto 14-6. At Charleston, the host Bluejays completed a 3-0 district run with a win over Caruthersville. Charleston will host Crystal City in a Class 3 sectional game Wednesday.


Winona, St. Vincent set up state title shots

Winona and St. Vincent will play for high school volleyball state championships Saturday in Warrensburg.

Winona (32-6-2) finished second in Class 1 round-robin semifinals Friday to set up a 1:30 p.m. matchup today against Sacred Heart (30-2-4). Leopold (28-3-3) will play Osceola (27-7-2) for third place.

St. Vincent (30-5-3) will face Stockton (29-4-3) at noon for the Class 2 state title after finishing first in Friday's four-team round-robin semifinals.


Jackson, Thayer finish 10-0 with big home wins

Jackson and Thayer joined a short list of teams Friday that finished the high school football season with perfect records.

Jackson (10-0) cruised past Seckman 42-0 for its third unbeaten regular season in the past 10 years under coach Carl Gross; the others were in 2001 and 1997. Jackson will host McCluer North in a Class 5 quarterfinal game on Friday.

Thayer won 57-21 in its finale against Miller and finished 10-0, setting up a Class 1 sectional game Wednesday against McAuley Catholic. Hayti also finished 10-0 with its win Thursday against St. Vincent and will go to Brentwood in a Class 1 game.

Both Fredericktown and Farmington finished a win short of unbeaten seasons with losses in the past seven days; Farmington lost to Festus 42-17 on Oct. 26 for its first defeat, and Fredericktown lost for the first time Thursday to rival Park Hills Central.


St. Vincent, Winona fall short in state title games

St. Vincent and Winona each fell short of a state volleyball championship, leaving Leopold as Southeast Missouri's only team to walk away with a win in Saturday's finals at Warrensburg.

In Class 1, Sacred Heart (31-2-4) pushed past Winona (32-7-2) in two sets, winning 26-24, 25-21. Molly McAfee finished with 11.5 points and 10 kills for Winona.

Leopold rallied to win the third-place game 15-25, 25-12, 25-14 over Osceola and finished 29-3-3. Maddy Hutchings' 14 kills and 20.5 points led Leopold.

In Class 2, St. Vincent finished a 30-6-3 season with a 25-15, 25-22 loss to Stockton (30-4-3) in the title game. Sarah DeWilde had seven kills and seven points for St. Vincent.


Hansbrough a favorite for AP's All-America hoops roster

Poplar Bluff graduate Tyler Hansbrough was a near-unanimous choice as the leading vote-getter on The Associated Press preseason All-America basketball team released Monday.

Hansbrough, a 6-foot-9 junior forward at North Carolina, was joined by senior center Roy Hibbert of Georgetown, senior guard Chris Lofton of Tennessee, senior guard Drew Neitzel of Michigan State and junior guard Darren Collison of UCLA.


Notre Dame advances; Jackson,
St. Pius fall in soccer playoffs

Defending Class 2 state champion Notre Dame moved a step closer to repeating Tuesday with a 2-0 win in the boys soccer state sectional round.

Notre Dame led 1-0 at halftime and scored again late in the game to seal the win.

Notre Dame (20-4-1) will play Duchesne (16-9-2) at 5 p.m. Friday in Fenton. Duchesne defeated St. Dominic 1-0 Tuesday.

In Class 1, St. Pius X dropped a 2-1 sectional game to John Burroughs at Fenton after the teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation. In Class 5, Jackson fell to Vianney 2-0 in the quarterfinal round at Farmington.


Unbeaten Hayti, Thayer set up Class 1 quarterfinal showdown

Hayti and Thayer are set for a battle of 11-0 teams in Monday's high school football quarterfinal round.

Thayer (11-0) rolled past McCauley Catholic 42-6 on Wednesday, and Hayti (11-0) defeated Brentwood 46-0 in St. Louis. The wins send Thayer and Hayti to a showdown at 7 p.m. Monday at Hayti.

Elsewhere, Festus (10-1) will host a Class 4 quarterfinal Monday against Vashon after defeating West Plains. In Fenton, Vashon knocked off Rockwood Summit on Wednesday.

At New Madrid, host New Madrid County Central (9-1) defeated Fredericktown 30-20 and will go to St. Louis to play MICDS (10-0) in a Class 3 quarterfinal Monday. It was the second loss in a row for the Blackcats (9-2).

At Charleston, Crystal City (10-1) broke a late 21-all tie with the Bluejays (4-7) to win 29-28 and advance to a rematch at home against Maplewood-Richmond Heights in Monday's Class 2 quarterfinal round. Maplewood defeated Crystal City 26-7 on Oct. 17 for the Hornets' only loss.

Jackson (10-0) hosts McCluer North (8-2) in a Class 5 quarterfinal game Friday.


Former SEMO end signs with Arena League team

Former Southeest Missouri State defensive end Kyle Hunt signed will play professional football after signing this week with the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League. During his two seasons with SEMO, Hunt made 58 tackles and five sacks. He made 16 tackles for losses of 52 yards and added an interception at Tennessee Tech in the 2005 season finale.


Notre Dame reaches state soccer title game

Ty Williams, Ryan Willen and Brock Dirnberger scored in the first half to push Notre Dame to a 3-1 win over Duchesne in Friday's Class 2 boys soccer state semifinal in Fenton.

Notre Dame (21-4-1) led 3-0 at the break, but Duchesne (16-10-2) scored 10 minutes into the second half.

The Bulldogs will play at noon Saturday at the A-B Center in Fenton for their second consecutive state title against the winner of tonight's semifinal between Cassville and Smithville.


Jackson pushes into Class 5 football semifinals

Jackson is in the Class 5 state football semifinals after defeating McCluer North 24-7 on Friday.

The Indians (10-1) will play at Waynesville (10-1) on Friday in a semifinal game. The winner advances to the state final Nov. 24 in St. Louis against either Belton or Fort Osage.

Jackson scored 24 consecutive points after trailing 7-0 early in the first quarter. The Indians held McCluer North (8-3) to less than 60 yards over the final three quarters and, after Kirkwood's loss Friday to Waynesville, are the final unbeaten team in Class 5.


Notre Dame wins Class 2 boys state soccer title

Ryan Willen scored twice, including once in the first minute, and Brock Dirnberger and Ty Williams each scored a goal to help lift Notre Dame to its second straight Class 2 boys state soccer championship.

Notre Dame (22-4-1) led Smithville 3-0 at halftime at the A-B Center in Fenton. It was a 4-0 lead before the Bulldogs gave up their only goal with seven minutes to play.

Willen, Mark Himmelberg and John Unterreiner all had assists.


Shootout seals OVC soccer title for SEMO

Southeast earned the Ohio Valley Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA women's soccer tournament by winning a shootout with Samford on Sunday.

After the teams finished regulation tied 1-1, both went scoreless in two overtimes to force a shootout. The Redhawks out-shot Samford 5-3 in the shootout.

SEMO's Ashley Runion, the tournament MVP, tied the game at 1-1 with her 11th goal of the season. The teams were scoreless at halftime.

NCAA tournament pairings will be announced at 7 p.m. Monday on ESPNews.


Thayer hangs on in faceoff of unbeaten Class 1 teams

Thayer will play in the Class 1 state semifinals after hanging on to win 14-13 at Hayti in a matchup of two 11-0 teams.

Hayti missed a 27-yard field goal in the final seconds to end its final drive and close its season at 11-1. Thayer (12-0) will play Tipton in a semifinal Saturday.

In a Class 4 quarterfinal in Festus, Vashon (9-2) pulled away from an early tie to defeat Festus 32-20. The Tigers finish the season at 10-2. In a Class 3 quarterfinal in St. Louis, MICDS (11-0) held off a late rally for a 28-27 win that ended New Madrid County Central's season at 9-2.

In a Class 2 quarterfinal at Crystal City, Maplewood-Richmond Heights (12-0) defeated the Hornets (10-2) for the second time this season, this time 27-14. Crystal City lost 26-7 in a conference matchup Oct. 12.


South Iron No. 1 in basketball season's opening tournament

Defending tournament champion South Iron is predicted to repeat in the region's first boys basketball tournament, which starts Monday.

The Panthers, who finished 23-5 and No. 14 in the SemoSportsWeb Top 20 last season, will open the Arcadia Valley Thanksgiving Tournament on Monday against eighth-seeded Bunker.

The season's opening-week schedule is highlighted by events Friday and Saturday at Van Buren and a one-day event Saturday at New Madrid County Central.


Southeast ends season with shootout loss at Missouri

Southeast went to a five-kick shootout for the second time in two games Friday, but this time it ended with a loss that eliminated the Redhawks from the NCAA women's soccer tournament.

SEMO lost 2-0 in the shootout in Columbia after tying Missouri 1-1 in regulation. Southeast (12-2-4) also decided its OVC championship game against Samford last week on penalty kicks.

Against Missouri (13-7-1), Southeast had just three shots in regulation, and only two shots on goal. Courtney Alexander scored Southeast's first-ever NCAA tournament goal during the 43rd minute.

Southeast is 0-2 in NCAA tournament games following last season's first-round loss to Illinois.


Waynesville eliminates Jackson from state playoffs

Jackson is out of the Class 5 high school football playoffs after a 25-14 loss Friday to Waynesville in a state semifinal game.

The Indians, one of two Southeast Missouri teams still unbeaten heading into weekend playoff games, led 14-6 at halftime Friday, but Waynesville (11-1) rallied to score twice in the third quarter for an 18-14 lead. The Tigers scored again late in the fourth to pull ahead by double-digits.

Thayer is the region's only team still clinging to playoff hopes. The Bobcats (12-0) play at Tipton in a Class 1 semifinal Saturday.


Southeast caps season with first OVC win

Southeast outscored Jacksonville State 22-0 during a second-half run to pull ahead 32-25 in the final game of the season Saturday at Houck Stadium.

Jacksonville State (6-5) led 15-0 and led by 15 points again late in the third quarter before Southeast (3-7) went on its run, capped by a touchdown pass from Houston Lillard to Miles Edwards that gave Southeast its first lead with 8 minutes left in the game. Lillard threw three touchdown passes after halftime.


Thayer reaches Class 1 state title game

Thayer, the No. 5-ranked team in the SemoSportsWeb football poll, will play for the Class 1 state championship at noon Saturday after winning 17-7 Saturday at Tipton.

Thayer trailed 17-7 before rallying to outscore Tipton 28-7 and win 35-24. The Bobcats (13-0) will play Orrick (13-0) for the Class 1 title at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis.


Season's first basketball tournament kicks off Monday

South Iron takes a top-10 ranking into the first boys basketball event of the season Monday at Ironton.

The 81st annual Arcadia Valley Thanksgiving Tournament's top-seeded Panthers open at 5 p.m. against Bismarck to tip off the season. Two more first-round games follow.

South Iron is No. 10 in the SemoSportsWeb preseason Top 25 poll. Scott County Central is ranked No. 1 ahead of Notre Dame and Charleston.


Three from Southeast picked for all-OVC football list

Three Southeast football players were chosen for the All-OVC team, the league said Tuesday.

Adam Casper and Doug Spada earned first-team spots, while Miles Edwards is on the All-Newcomer squad.

Casper, a senior linebacker, is on the first team for the second year in a row after leading the league with 112 tackles — 47 solo — in 10 games. Spada, the Redhawks' sophomore kicker, is on the team as a punter. He punted 59 times, averaging 42.5 yards per kick.

Edwards, a true freshman receiver, led the Redhawks with 34 receptions for 480 yards and seven touchdowns.


Hillsboro football coach resigns after 0-10 season

A rocky relationship between Hillsboro school leaders and football coach Mike Genge reached a finish Tuesday when the school board accepted the resignation of the third-year coach.

Genge resigned after the Hawks went 0-10 this season, 4-6 last season and 1-9 the previous season.

I would have never guessed we would have had the season we had," Genge told the News Democrat Journal for Tuesday's edition. "And when you don't have a good season, heads roll."

But Genge's troubles began when vitamin supplements were discovered in the football offices during his first season. He as fired by the board, but after voters swept out several board members, Genge was rehired in time for the 2006 season.

"It's been a clash of philosophy ever since I got here," he said. "A variety of things have been told to me, and it's always the same thing. I try to do one thing, and that's not right. It got to be really frustrating."


South Iron, West County meet for Arcadia Valley title

Top-seeded South Iron and second-seeded West County will play for the championship of the Arcadia Valley Thanksgiving Tournament after both won semifinals Wednesday.

South Iron (2-0) defeated fifth-seeded Lesterville 78-54, and West County (2-0) defeated Park Hills Central 55-53 in overtime to set up today's 8 p.m. championship game.

In other finals, Lesterville and Central will play for third place at 6:30, and Ellington and Arcadia Valley play for fifth place at 5.


South Iron's title is fifth straight in AV holiday tournament

South Iron connected on nine three-pointers to defeat West County 66-47 on Thursday for the Panthers' fifth consecutive title in the Arcadia Valley Thanksgiving Tournament, the season's first boys basketball event in Southeast Missouri.

West County (2-1) trailed by just a point after the first quarter, but South Iron (3-0) pulled away and led 31-19 by halftime. South Iron led by 20 points late in the third quarter.

Cody Smith scored 16 for South Iron; Cory Whelehon's 21 points led West County.

In other finals, Lesterville defeated Park Hills Central 75-65 for third place, and Arcadia Valley defeated Ellington 72-58 for fifth.


Top-ranked Braves start fast at Riverbend

Southeast Missouri's top-ranked boys basketball team rolled to a pair of wins and a 2-0 start during a weekend event at New Madrid County Central, while Eminence turned heads at Van Buren with pair of upsets in the Current River Challenge.

At NMCC's 13th annual Riverbend Classic, D.D. Gillespie scored 55 points in wins over West Memphis on Friday and Pine Bluff, Ark., on Saturday. The Braves are ranked No. 1 in the SemoSportsWeb preseason Top 25 poll. New rankings will be released Monday.

Also at NMCC, No. 6 Bell City went 2-0 with wins over Pine Bluff and West Memphis. Charleston and NMCC each went 1-1; both defeated Byhalia, Miss., by double figures and lost in lopsided finishes to Memphis Central. Charleston fell behind 43-20 at halftime and lost 79-47 to Memphis Central, and NMCC lost to the same team 63-41 on Friday.

At Van Buren, No. 25 Eminence went 2-0 with wins over two higher-ranked teams. On Friday the Redwings defeated No. 18 Clarkton 83-77, then defeated No. 11 Doniphan 58-49 on Saturday. Meadow Heights also went 2-0 in the two-day event with wins over Winona and East Carter County.


A tough start for favorites at Woodland, Oran and Farmington

Two teams seeded No. 2 and another seeded No. 3 lost in the opening round of three area boys basketball tournaments Monday, setting the stage for surprise semifinal matchups.

At Farmington, sixth-seeded Salem opened its season with a 56-48 win over second-seeded Doniphan (0-2). At Woodland, seventh-seeded Zalma is 1-0 after a 65-57 defeat of second-seeded Perryville, which lost last season's championship to Notre Dame. And at Oran, sixth-seeded Twin Rivers upended second-seeded Malden in its opener, 65-59.

No. 1-seeded teams still ruled the day in tournament openers: top-seeded Ste. Genevieve defeated Valle 55-46 at the Crystal City tournament; Bernie rolled 101-21 in its opener against Southland at the Bernie Invitational; Saxony Lutheran won 77-28 against Oak Ridge at the Woodland Invitational; and Scott County Central defeated Oran 94-62 at the Oran Invitational.


Southeast makes history with home shot at Baylor

Southeast's women's basketball team will host a nationally ranked team for the first time in its history as a Division I school Thursday when No. 10 Baylor goes to the Show Me Center.

The 7:30 p.m. game is the first of back-to-back matchups for Southeast against Top 25 teams. The Redhawks head to No. 22 Purdue on Sunday.

Baylor (5-0) comes into Thursday's game fresh off a 69-56 win Sunday over California and has five players averaging double figures in scoring, led by junior guard Jhasmin Player's 15 points per game.

Southeast junior Sonya Daugherty ranks fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference with 16 points per game.


Tournament finals are set at Oran, Crystal City, Woodland, Bernie

The matchups are set for championship night at boys basketball tournaments in Oran, Bernie and Crystal City after six teams won semifinals Thursday.

At Oran, top-seeded Scott County Central overwhelmed Cooter and No. 2 Bell City defeated Twin Rivers, both by double-digits. That sets up today's 8 p.m. game between SCC, ranked No. 1 in the SemoSportsWeb Top 25, and No. 6 Bell City.

At Bernie, top-seeded Bernie defeated SCAA rival Bloomfield, while East Prairie defeated Puxico to earn spots in tonight's championship game.

At Crystal City, top-seeded Ste. Genevieve fell to Potosi, sending the Trojans into tonight's finale against Crystal City, which defeated rival St. Pius X.

At Marble Hill, Saxony Lutheran and Meadow Heights reached the final round with semifinal wins. Saxony deafeated Leopold, and Meadow Heights defeated first-round upset winner Zalma.

And at Marissa, Ill., two Southeast Missouri teams set up a matchup Saturday in the third-place game after each lost semifinals Thursday. Fredericktown lost to Okawville, Ill., and North County fell to Marissa to set up Saturday's third-place game at 6 p.m.

Semifinals are tonight at tournaments at Caledonia, Senath and Farmington, where Salem won its pool division to earn a spot in Saturday's final against the winner of Friday's Jackson-Cape Girardeau Central game.


Bell City upsets No. 1 Braves for Oran title

Scott County Central rallied from a double-figure deficit after halftime, but the Braves couldn't hold off Bell City's upset Friday in the championship of the Oran Invitational boys basketball tournament.

Bell City, 5-0 and ranked No. 6 in the SemoSportsWeb Top 25, pulled ahead by 20 points in the second half before the No. 1-ranked Braves rallied to make it a one-point game in the fourth quarter, including 73-72 in the final seconds before Bell City scored on two free throws.

The Braves, ranked No. 1 in the first two SemoSportsWeb Top 25 polls this season, are 4-1.
