At St. Francois County Raceway in Farmington, hometown racer Steve Short will go for his second win in a row Saturday when SFCR hosts its annual Queen's Royale, an event worth $5,000 to its winner. Short won for the first time this season on Friday and sits eighth in the track point standings. At Malden Speedway, two out-of-state competitors will lead the charge into this weekend's two-day Cotton Boll Cup that begins Friday. Tait Davenport of Paducah, Ky., won last week's late model feature race in a rare visit to the track, and Jeff Greene of Paragould, Ark., won in modifieds. Both classes will compete Friday and Saturday in events worth $1,200 to the winner each day. Jackson's blowout over rival is one for history New 10.4.07 A penalty wiped out a Cape Girardeau Central touchdown in the final seconds, preserving Jackson's 56-13 win Thursday in the Indians' most lopsided win in the history of the football rivalry. Jackson, 6-0 and ranked No. 2 in the SemoSportsWeb football poll, led 42-0 by halftime at Houck Stadium and rolled from there. Central is 1-5. The win was Jackson's biggest in the rivalry, which started in 1914. It was only the third time the winning team scored more than 53 points. Central's most lopsided win in the series was 70-0 in 1942. The time either team duplicated Thursday's margin of 43 points was in 1972, when Central won 49-6. No. 1 Knights start fast to beat Mules; Festus scores 68 New 10.5.07 Top-ranked Farmington scored twice just before halftime to turn a close game into a 49-14 defeat of Poplar Bluff in one of the region's most anticipated matchups among Top 10 teams. Farmington, No. 1 in the SemoSportsWeb poll, rode a six-game winning streak into the game and led 21-7 at one point in the first half, then made it 42-7 going into halftime. Aaron Baker threw for a school-record five touchdowns, including three TD passes to Doug Noble. Poplar Bluff, which went to Farmington at 3-2 and fresh off a 27-21 overtime win over Farmington rival North County, entered the game ranked No. 6 in Southeast Missouri. In the Bootheel, Festus lit up the scoreboard with the biggest winning score of the season in a 68-32 defeat of Caruthersville. Tyler White scored seven touchdowns for the Tigers (5-1) and had another called back on a penalty. One of the area's unbeaten teams fell for the first time Friday when Herculaneum's Kevin Moore stuffed Park Hills Central's potential game-winning run on fourth down and helped the Blackcats secure a 17-13 homecoming win. The Blackcats are 1-5 and dropped Central, which suffered through seven turnovers, to 5-1. Several games are Saturday: Liberty at Hayti, Chaffee at East Prairie, Fredericktown at Perrville, and Ste. Genevieve at John Burroughs. On Thursday, Jackson defeated Cape Girardeau Central 56-13. Blackcats knock off Pirates for fourth shutout New 10.6.07 Fredericktown's defense gained its fourth shutout in six tries Saturday, spoiling Perryville's high school football homecoming with a 35-0 afternoon win. Ryan Sawyer ran for 150 yards for the Blackcats, which are 6-0 and host Charleston on Friday before heading into their three-game district lineup. Kris Cottner ran for 105 yards for the Pirates (3-3). Saturday's final scores: Chaffee 28, East Prairie 14 Hayti 55, Liberty 30 Ste. Genevieve 35, John Burroughs 0 Season champ wraps up Queen's Royale top prize New 10.7.07 Season points champion Joey Montgomery put an exclamation mark on his season at St. Francois County Raceway with a $5,000 win in the track's annual Queen's Royale for sprint cars. Montgomery, of Fredericktown, led Ohio racer Dale Blaney to the finish for his biggest win of the season. Tim Montgomery was second, and 2006 Queen's Royale winner Danny Smith of Bloomington, Ind., was fourth. Rod Crabdree of Farmington was fifth. Kasey Nations won the modified season finale ahead of Billy Smith and Jeremy Greenwalt. In pure stocks, Mike Savage won the final event of the season. Unbeaten ND leads area teams into sectionals New 10.9.07 Oran hosts a Class 1 sectional game Wednesday, but other teams including the region's only remaining unbeaten team are going on the road for a chance to reach the next round of high school softball playoffs. Oran (16-2) hosts defending Class 1 runnerup Miller (24-2) in one of three Southeast Missouri sectional games. At Park Hills, Notre Dame (26-0) plays DeSoto (24-3) in a rematch of last year's sectional round, which DeSoto won 7-6. At Poplar Bluff, Kelly (18-6) will aim for another trip deep into the playoffs when it faces East Carter County (10-11). Kelly reached the semifinal round last year. 31 injured when Viburnum team bus crashes before game New 10.9.07 A school bus carrying the Viburnum High School volleyball team overturned Tuesday night, and all 31 people aboard were taken to hospitals for mostly minor injuries. The bus, which was carrying students from Viburnum to nearby Lesterville, overturned shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday, according to the highway patrol. No other vehicles were involved in the accident, and the patrol was still trying to determine what caused it. Most of the injured were taken to a hospital in nearby Salem, and others were airlifted to two hospitals in St. Louis. ND, Kelly win, Oran falls in sectional playoffs New 10.10.07 Kelly and Notre Dame both will play this weekend in high school softball state quarterfinals after they won Wednesday. At Park Hills, Notre Dame (27-0) avenged last year's one-point loss to DeSoto and won 1-0 against the Dragons (24-4) in Class 3. Notre Dame will play Affton (26-3) at Ballwin on Saturday. At Poplar Bluff, Kelly (19-6) cruised past East Carter County 9-2 in a Class 2 game. East Carter finished 10-12. Kelly will play Principia (15-4) at Ballwin on Saturday. At Oran, the host Eagles (16-3) were stopped 6-0 by Miller (25-2). SEMO women picked to repeat as OVC champs New 10.11.07 Southeast's women's basketball team is an overwhelming favorite to win the Ohio Valley Conference according to a survey of the league's coaches and sports information directors released Thursday. Southeast was voted to win on 19 of 22 ballots. Charleston grad Missy Whitney was chosen as the OVC's preseason player of the year; she was a second-team all-conference pick last season. Sonya Daugherty joined Whitney as picks for the preseason all-conference team. On the men's side, Southeast was picked to finish fifth behind defending league champion Austin Peay. Senior Brandon Foust, who led the team in scoring and rebounding last season, was the only Southeast player picked for the all-conference team. Win streaks grow to seven for three area teams New 10.12.07 Farmington, Fredericktown and Jackson haven't lost yet during the high school football season, and all three teams built dominant first-half leads and won big Friday to improve to 7-0 heading into the first weekend of district games. Farmington defeated Windsor 54-0, Fredericktown defeated Charleston 40-0, and Jackson defeated Poplar Bluff 35-21. The area's only matchup of unbeaten teams, Maplewood defeated Crystal City 26-7. Colonels' passing buries Redhawks New 10.13.07 Eastern Kentucky blistered Southeast for more than 500 yards of offense to win 44-17 in an Ohio Valley Conference matchup Saturday in Richmond, Ky. After the Redhawks (2-4) went ahead on Victor Anderson's first touchdown of the game, Eastern (5-2) rallied for 24 consecutive points and built a 24-7 halftime lead that was never in danger. Colonels quarterback Allan Holland threw for 361 yards. For Southeast, Anderson ran for 59 yards and threw for 55. Mike Jones' 67 yards rushing led Southeast, which hosts Murray State for homecoming Oct. 20. District football openers pit early favorites New 10.15.07 Fredericktown and Jackson both put 7-0 records on the line against two of their biggest opponents of the season Friday when football district games begin across Southeast Missouri. At Jackson, the host Indians host Eureka in a matchup of 7-0 teams and early favorites in Class 5 District 1. At Fredericktown, the host Blackcats (7-0) are chasing their first undefeated regular season since 1979 and play defending district champion Ste. Genevieve (5-2) in a Class 3 District 2 battle. Another local Class 3 district features a potential championship game when Kennett (6-1) hosts New Madrid County Central (5-1) in District 1. District games continue the following two weeks, leading to the state sectional round Nov. 7. Foust: I'll be back at practice Thursday New 10.17.07 Southeast senior Brandon Foust confirmed Wednesday that he will return to men's basketball practice this week after an investigation into an on-campus incident last week. Southeast said in a news release that Foust will not be suspended from school, but coach Scott Edgar did not say when Foust would rejoin the team. Foust, a senior and the team's only preseason Ohio Valley Conference all-conference pick, confirmed to SemoSportsWeb blogger Mark Unterreiner that he would begin practicing with the team Thursday. Foust led the Redhawks in scoring and rebounding last season; the team is picked to finish fifth in the OVC this season. Foust's return definite, but still on hold New 10.18.07 Southeast men's basketball coach Scott Edgar on Thursday backed up what preseason all-conference pick Brandon Foust said a day earlier: Foust is still a Redhawk. Edgar said in a story published Friday that Foust is still a member of the team after the school announced Wednesday that he would not be suspended from campus because of an on-campus incident several days earlier. Foust on Wednesday said he would return to practice Thursday, although Edgar said Foust has yet to join practice and didn't specify when he would practice next. Foust was Southeast's only preseason all-conference pick and led the Redhawks in scoring and rebounding last season. Southeast opens with a preseason game Nov. 1 against Lincoln. Kelly, ND both fall in state softball semis New 10.19.07 Offenses struggled for Kelly and previously unbeaten Notre Dame, which both lost in softball state semifinals Friday in Columbia. Kelly (21-7) had just one hit in a 7-0 loss to defending Class 2 state champion Palmyra (25-2); Notre Dame (28-1) had two hits in a 3-0 loss to Webb City (24-4). Lauren Reinagel gave up seven hits and a walk in her first loss of the season for Notre Dame, which fell behind 1-0 in the first inning. Jessica Riley gave up two hits and walked four in Kelly's loss. Upsets come up short in district openers New 10.19.07 St. Pius X and North County came up short in upset bids Friday in high school football district openers, while Jackson and Fredericktown remained unbeaten with wins at home. At Jackson, the Indians (8-0) scored in the closing minutes to defeat previously unbeaten Eureka 21-20. At Fredericktown, the Blackcats (8-0) knocked off the defending district champion Dragons 33-18. In another Class 3 District 2 matchup, Park Hills Central was handed its second loss of the season, 41-13 against Potosi. At Desloge, host North County saw a 24-3 disappear when district favorite Festus raced back for a 27-24 win. At Crystal City, St. Pius X came up short in a bid to knock off the favored Hornets 21-14. Elsewhere, New Madrid County Central handed Kennett its second loss of the season in a lopsided 55-14 finish. Racers keep Redhawks winless in league race New 10.20.07 Murray State came back from a scoreless first half to spoil Southeast's homecoming 31-17 and drop the Redhawks to 0-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Southeast cut Murray State's lead to within a touchdown at 17-10 in the third quarter and again at 24-17, but the Racers scored once more and intercepted a Southeast pass in the final six minutes to end the Redhawks' late drive. The loss was the fourth in a row for Southeast (2-5), which goes to Tennessee-Martin on Saturday. Murray State is 2-5 and ended a three-game slide with its first OVC win of the season. Media picks Hansbrough for ACC's preseason player title New 10.21.07 Former Poplar Bluff all-state basketball player Tyler Hansbrough is the Atlantic Coast Conference's preseason player of the year, according to an annual media poll Sunday. Hansbrough, a junior at North Carolina, received 60 of 64 votes for the award. His Tar Heels team received all 64 first-place votes as the league's top team. Hansbrough is a two-time All-America pick and is on track to become North Carolina's all-time leading scorer. Carolina begins the season with an exhibition game Nov. 3. Class 1 showdowns top sectional volleyball slate New 10.24.07 Class 1 playoff showdowns between the region's high school volleyball heavyweights are set after district tournaments wrapped up Tuesday at several area sites. Teams will compete in a sectional round Saturday, followed later in the day by quarterfinal games at the same site. Semifinals are Nov. 2, and state championships Nov. 3; both rounds are at Warrensburg. Saturday's sectional round at Bell City will pit four Class 1 teams with a combined record of 107-12-5: Bell City (30-2-1) will face Leopold in one sectional game, and Bismarck (26-5-1) meets Gideon (27-2-3) in the other. The winners play later in the day. In Class 2, host Scott City will play the winner of the District 3 championship game still to be played; in the other game, Crystal City (28-3-2) faces Hayti (17-6-1). In Class 3 at DeSoto, Notre Dame (15-13-2) takes on the District 4 winner still to be determined, and in the other game, Borgia (21-11-2) meets Festus (28-5). Class 4 games will be set after the completion of district tournaments Thursday. Farmington marches on; Notre Dame draws a sectional foe New 10.25.07 Farmington advanced into the sectional round of the state high school volleyball tournament Wednesday night, and Notre Dame found out who it will face in its first step of the state playoffs. Farmington (20-9-1) defeated Jackson 25-23, 25-23 in Cape Girardeau to clinch a Class 4 district title and set up a sectional matchup against Rosati-Kain (19-13-2) Saturday at Kirkwood. In St. Louis, Lutheran South (27-5-1) defeated Bishop DuBourg to win a district title and set up a sectional date with Notre Dame, which won its district Tuesday. In Class 1, Winona (29-6) clinched its district by defeating Summersville 25-21, 25-19. It will play Lockwood (28-7-1) in a sectional game Saturday at Billings. St. Vincent rallies past AV to join sectional qualifiers New 10.26.07 St. Vincent became the Southeast Missouri's final team to earn a spot in the high school volleyball state sectional round with its win Thursday over Arcadia Valley. St. Vincent (27-5-2) knocked off Arcadia Valley (23-6-2) for the Class 2 District 3 title, winning 20-25, 27-25, 25-15 at Greenville. St. Vincent advances to play Scott City (18-14-2) in the sectional round Saturday at Bloomfield, where Crystal City and Hayti meet in a later sectional. The winners meet in a quarterfinal game at 6. Winners advance to the state semifinal games next Saturday in Warrensburg. Class 4 district playoff battle goes to Festus New 10.26.07 Farmington lost for the first time this season Friday, putting Festus in the Class 4 high school football playoffs. Festus (8-1) rolled 42-17 at home to push Farmington (8-1) into a second-place tie in the district chase. Festus is the district's only unbeaten team and plays DeSoto (1-8) next week. Even if the Tigers lose, they already have defeated both teams that could match their win-loss record in the district. Notre Dame all-stater commits to Lafayette New 10.29.07 Returning all-state basketball pick Ryan Willen is bypassing local options and heading to the Northeast to play college basketball. Willen said that he will play at Lafayette of the Patriot League next season. He averaged 22 points last season and was picked for both the media and the coaches' all-state basketball teams. Willen said he will sign during the early signing period that begins Nov. 14. Jackson, Notre Dame, St. Pius head into soccer sectionals New 10.31.07 Three Southeast Missouri teams earned berths in the state high school boys sectional round by winning district titles Wednesday. In Class 3, Jackson (18-4-1) will play the winner of District 2 at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Farmington after the Indians defeated Cape Girardeau Central 2-1. In Class 2, defending state champion Notre Dame (19-4-1) defeated DeSoto 2-0 to earn a sectional round matchup against Clayton (11-11-2), which knocked off Lutheran South 2-0. The teams play Tuesday at Fenton. In Class 1, St. Pius X (15-9) defeated Saxony Lutheran 1-0 at Jackson, putting the Lancers in Tuesday's sectional game against the District 2 winner determined today. The sectional is at Fenton. |
