Other key matchups Friday include Dexter at Festus, Kennett at Caruthersville, Hayti at Malden, Parkway North at Jackson, and Fox at North County. Lawsuit stems from East Carter hazing charges New 9.9.07 The East Carter County School District and Lyon College are among five defendants in a lawsuit filed on behalf of 11 local families who say the schools should have prevented the alleged sexual hazing of several basketball players. In the suit filed in Carter County Circuit Court, Mark Kennedy and Christopher Yarbro of Poplar Bluff claim that the schools failed to provide proper oversight and protection for the students, who they say were hazed by six older members of the East Carter County boys basketball team during Lyon College's basketball camp in June. The six students are scheduled to make their first court appearance Monday in Batesville, Ark. Also named in the suit are Lyon summer athletic camps coordinator Kevin Jenkins, East Carter basketball coach Benji Stahl, and East Carter athletic director Eric Allen. Stahl resigned in August. The suit claims that the defendants "failed to protect plaintiffs from the violent propensities of fellow members of the East Carter County R-2 basketball team." It also says that students "were allowed to become subjected to multiple acts of abuse, sexual abuse, harassment, assault, battery and otherwise physically and mentally abused at the hands of older East Carter County R-2 basketball team members." Twenty-two students from East Carter attended the camp. Stahl "told the plaintiffs that their failure to participate in the basketball camp would adversely impact their playing time in the up and coming basketball season," the suit alleges. Stahl attended the Lyon camp, but the suit claims that students were left unsupervised during lunch breaks and again after 10 p.m. each day. Big wins push Perryville, Farmington, Thayer to 3-0 New 9.14.07 Perryville is 3-0 for the first time in 18 years after handing MAFC rival Ste. Genevieve a 21-14 defeat Friday in one of the biggest surprises among 21 games involving Southeast Missouri football teams. Kris Cottner ran for more than 200 yards in Perryville's first win over Ste. Genevieve in 13 seasons. The Dragons, No. 3 in the SemoSportsWeb poll, played much of the game without starting quarterback Kory Faulkner, who left in the first quarter with a knee injury. Faulkner threw for 2,222 yards last year and has more than 800 yards of offense for Ste. Genevieve this season. The extent of his injury wasn't determined Friday. At Waynesville, Farmington quarterback Aaron Baker scored on an 87-yard run with 9:56 to play, and Aaron Blum added a 29-yard field goal minutes later to lift the Knights, No. 1 in the SemoSportsWeb poll, past Waynesville 18-14. Farmington overcame five turnovers in the win, including a fumble in the final two minutes. At Thayer, the hosts scored more than 40 points for the third week in a row and avenged a lopsided loss last year to Malden by winning 41-0. At Dexter, the host Bearcats defeated Sikeston 21-0 and prevented the Bulldogs' first 3-0 start since 1998. Parents question delay in East Carter hazing charges New 9.19.07 As proceedings continue in Arkansas juvenile court against six East Carter County basketball players accused of hazing, parents in the East Carter County school district are questioning the six-week delay by Independence County officials in filing charges. "It got to the point where (the Independence prosecutor's office) didn't want to talk to us," an East Carter parent who filed the report told the Arkansas Times for its Sept. 20 edition. "They don't need to shove us behind our kids are victims." At a hearing Sept. 10 in Batesville, Ark., the six pleaded innocent to charges that they hazed younger students during a basketball camp at Lyon College in Batesville in early June. If they're found guilty, their sentence is expected to range from probation to confinement at the Division of Youth Services in Alexander, Ark. Parents swamped Independence Prosecuting Attorney Don McSpadden with calls when the investigation began, but McSpadden said he waited to bring charges only after evidence failed to support a felony case. Based on sheriff's reports and a cell-phone video recorded by an East Carter student, McSpadden said he lacked evidence to file felony charges. He said the cell-phone video didn't show penetration or sexual gratification. According to police reports, several older East Carter players sodomized some of the younger players with pine cones, but Arkansas law defines sexual gratification as a necessary condition of sexual assault.
