Showcase turns to St. Louis for '08 lineup

New 9.2.08

Six teams from metro St. Louis, three from Southeast Missouri and one from Illinois are in the field for the Pepsi Showcase, a one-day high school basketball event at the Show Me Center, organizers announced.

This year's event, which moved to Nov. 29 this year from its original late-December spot last year, will feature five boys games.

The matchups: Cape Girardeau Central vs. Hazelwood Central (1 p.m.); Pinckneyville, Ill., vs. Miller Career Academy (2:45); Poplar Bluff vs. McCluer (4:30); Sikeston vs. Lafayette (6:15); and Maplewood Richmond Heights vs. Chaminade (8).

Cape Girardeau Central, Lafayette, Pinckneyville, and Poplar Bluff are the only returning teams from last year's inaugural event.

Notre Dame Soccerfest opens with four games, two fields

New 9.4.08

Six Southeast Missouri teams and a pair from Illinois set out on a three-run run toward Notre Dame's Soccerfest tournament title today on two fields at the high school.

The boys event opens when Cape Girardeau Central and Saxony Lutheran meet at 3:30 p.m. Games follow at 4:30 (Jackson vs. Marion, Ill.), 5:30 (Sikeston vs. Carbondale, Ill.) and 6:30 (defending Class 2 state champion Notre Dame vs. Poplar Bluff).

Semifinals are Friday, with finals at 3, 5 and 7 p.m. Saturday.

Quarterbacks take center stage in Week 2

New 9.5.08

A pair of prolific passers and a string of rivalry games highlight Week 2 of high school football on what's expected to be a dry, cooler night across Southeast Missouri.

One game already has been moved because of a field soaked by Thursday's rain: Salem will wait a day for its field to dry and host St. Clair at 7 p.m. Saturday.

At Ste. Genevieve, Dragons quarterback Kory Faulkner and Valle passer Michael Greminger combined for more than 600 yards last week, and both step on the field to lead their teams inthe 45th annual Old Settlement Showdown series. Ste. Genevieve has won the last 10 matchups.

At Sikeston, the host Bulldogs face Charleston in the 100-year anniversary of the series. It's the 123rd matchup between the two as both look for wins after opening-week losses.

Another key game features a state-ranked matchup with Mountain Grove at Thayer, and in a pair of Bootheel rivalries, Malden goes to Hayti while Kennett hosts Caruthersville.

Sikeston, Valle top early-season rivalry games

New 9.5.08

A week after fumbling away a late fourth-quarter lead to Fredericktown, Sikeston made sure to put away its latest opponent early.

Sikeston, playing rival Charleston for the 123rd time in the 100-year series tonight, took a big lead early and made it last in a 48-6 defeat of the Bluejays in the 123rd meeting between the teams.

In Ste. Genevieve, Valle quarterback Michael Greminger scored with just less than 2 minutes to play, pushing the Warriors ahead to stay 28-25 in a win over the visiting Dragons, ranked No. 2 in Southeast Missouri.

Valle trailed 19-7 in the first half, then lost a fourth-quarter lead when Kory Faulkner scored on a play that would leave him sidelined with an injury for the final minutes. With Faulkner on the sideline with possible bruised or fractured ribs, Ste. Genevieve threw an interception to end its final drive.

Among other top-ranked teams tonight, No. 1-ranked Farmington rolled to a lopsided 35-2 win at home over Belleville (Ill.) East. Elsewhere, Union quarterback Jordan Webb passed for 285 yards, and his team defeated No. 3 Poplar Bluff 49-14 after leading 35-0 at halftime.

In a matchup of teams ranked statewide, Thayer knocked off Mountain Grove 21-13.

Southeast no match for Missouri in 52-3 loss

New 9.7.08

Missouri scored on its first five possessions and the Tigers ended up three points shy of the school record for first-half scoring Saturday in a 52-3 defeat of Southeast.

Southeast, playing Missouri for the first time since 1936, has lost its last three games against BCS programs (Missouri, Cincinnati last year and Arkansas in 2006) by a combined 174-13. The Redhawks gained a first down for the first time on their third possession and missed a field goal in the first half. Doug Spada's 41-yard kick in the fourth quarter erased the shutout.

Perryville soccer team clears second milestone

New 9.9.08

Perryville won on the road last week in the debut of its boys soccer program. On Monday, the Pirates scored another benchmark with their first win at home.

The Pirates, 2-0 in their inaugural season, defeated North County 6-3 on goals by six different teammates: Chaz Favier, Wade Fulton, Dalton Hoehn, Wade Lawrence, Ben Prevallet and Kenny Stephenson.

Lawrence, Prevallet, Josh Fulmer and Tyler Lawrence also had assists.

For North County (1-1), Matt Robinson, Ethan Salazar and Phillip Wrabetz scored.

Southeast opens OVC schedule with loss to Tenn. Tech

New 9.11.08

Southeast fell into a 10-0 hole in the first quarter on its way to a 29-27 loss to Tennessee Tech in the OVC football opener for both teams Thursday.

After Southeast tied it at 17-17 late in the first half, Tech (2-1) scored on a 51-yard field goal to take a 20-17 edge into halftime. Southeast took its final lead at 27-23 on Houston Lillard's 21-yard pass to Bradley Brown in the fourth quarter, but Tech regained the lead in the with 7:20 to play on a two-yard touchdown by Derrian Waters.

For Southeast, its 1-2 start is its first since 2005 when the Redhawks finished 2-9 in coach Tim Billings' final season.

Valle rolls to blowout win over rival St. Vincent; Jackson falls

New 9.12.08

Valle is doing its best to prove that its surprise win over Ste. Genevieve a week ago was no fluke.

The Warriors (2-1), playing their second straight rivalry game after a defeat of the Dragons last week, led 32-7 at halftime and won 46-7, limiting St. Vincent (1-2) to less than 100 yards of offense in a Mississippi Area Football Conference matchup.

The win broke a dry spell for the Warriors: Valle had lost its last three meetings in its series with St. Vincent.

Among top-ranked teams, No. 1 Farmington (2-0) was idle Friday and plays Jefferson City Helias on Saturday. In St. Louis, No. 2 Jackson, now 1-2, fell 14-7 to Gateway Tech.

Little Rock sprint racer sweeps USCS Malden event

New 9.13.08

Tim Crawley of Little Rock, Ark., won the top qualifers' dash and the 25-lap feature race to win Saturday's United Sprint Car Series event at Malden Speedway.

Crawley led from start to finish in the night's finale and withstood charges from Marshall Skinner, who finished second. Terry Gray was third, Derek Hager fourth and Kent Buckley fifth.

Hunter Rasdon started on the pole and finished there in the USCS-sanctioned event for modifieds. Brad Buck was second and Paul Reeder third. Other events winners Saturday were Todd Hall in late models, Jamie Robards in hobby, Michael Lack in pure stock, Josh Greene in e-mods, and Jimmy Newsome in mini stock.

Southeast QB arrested after skipping court

New 9.16.08

Southeast, already in an early-season spin after back-to-back losses to Tennessee Tech and Missouri, faces another obstacle: the arrest of its quarterback.

Redhawks starting quarterback Houston Lillard was arrested Monday on charges that he failed to appear in court to face a public indecency charge, according to a police report Tuesday.

Lillard was booked and released on bond. He faces a new court date Oct. 14.

Lillard, a 22-year-old recruit from Oakland, Calif., threw for 1,375 yards as a junior in 2007, and he passed for 186 yards Saturday in a 29-27 loss to Tennessee Tech. The team's 1-2 start is its worst since 2005, the final season for coach Tim Billings.

Lillard is one of four quarterbacks on the roster, joining junior college transfer Dustin Powell and freshmen Bobby Hoffman and Matt Scheible. Of the four, only Lillard has experience as a starter.

QB will start Saturday despite arrest, coach says

New 9.18.08

Houston Lillard will hang on to his starting quarterback job Saturday despite his arrest earlier this week.

Southeast coach Tony Samuel confirmed to KZIM-AM on Wednesday that Lillard would start despite his second arrest in less than four months. The school confirmed again Thursday that Lillard will remain the starter, according to the station.

Lillard, 22, was arrested July 4 in Cape Girardeau for public indecency and again Monday after he failed to appear in court to face the original charge. Lillard said in a published report Wednesday that it was "an honest mistake."

"Football had me more sidetracked," he said. "I just didn't make it."

Lillard faces a new court appearance Oct. 14 to face the public indecency charge as well as the charge of failure to appear in court.

The arrest of Lillard added to Southeast's early-season woes that included back-to-back losses to Tennessee Tech and Missouri, along with an overtime defeat of Division II opponent Southwest Baptist. Southeast is 1-2 for the first time since 2005 and hosts Missouri State on Saturday.

Region's top rusher, top QB face off in Week 4

New 9.19.08

The region's top rusher and top passer both come from the same conference, and tonight they'll be on the same field.

Quarterback Blake Parr of Kennett and running back M.C. Williams of East Prairie help lead their teams into a matchup that highlights the Week 4 high school football schedule today. Parr has thrown for 813 yards during his team's 3-0 start that has pushed Kennett to No. 10 in the Southast Missouri poll; Williams ran for 646 games in his team's 2-1 start that included a win last week over then-No. 6 Hayti.

Other top games today feature Caruthersville at Hayti, Poplar Bluff at Dexter, Potosi at Herculaneum, and Sikeston at Jackson.

Storms delay Farmington, Jackson, others

New 9.19.08

It turned into a long night — with a lot of waiting — for high school football teams.

Games at Chaffee, Farmington, Jackson, North County were among those delayed by weather as a line of severe storms swept across the region. The line of storms stretched from New Madrid north to Ste. Genevieve County; the strongest cells passed through St. Francis and Ste. Genevieve counties and bypassed most of the Bootheel, where games were played as scheduled.

The slow-moving line of storms delayed the start of some games until almost 9 p.m. At Jackson, players and fans were ushered into the high school gym shortly before warmups because of lightning. That game finally began at 9.

At Farmington, the Knights' game against Cape Girardeau Central was stopped and started twice. It finally ended shortly after 11:15 in a lopsided Knights victory.

At North County, the host team's homecoming game against Sullivan was stopped in the second quarter. It resumed at 10:15 and ended just before midnight.

At Ste. Genevieve, the host Dragons were awarded a 47-7 win over Crystal City when that game was ruled final at halftime.

One game was postponed: Scott City will play at Fredericktown at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Among other final scores, No. 10 Kennett held off East Prairie and won 41-35, while No. 4 Festus, No. 6 Thayer and No. 7 North County all lost at home.

Missouri State pulls away from SEMO early

New 9.21.08

Southeast fell into a hole early and never got closer than 10 points from there in a 45-28 loss Saturday to Missouri State, its third defeat in three weeks.

The Redhawks (1-3) scored touchdowns on four consecutive possessions in the second half, but it was too late to overcome Missouri State's 21-0 halftime lead. Southeast's defense held Missouri State to just 112 yards after halftime, but the Bears (2-1) didn't need many to score twice on interception returns, once on a kickoff return and once on a short drive set up by an interception. Southeast quarterbacks Houston Lillard and Matt Scheible combined to throw four interceptions.

Southeast opens a stretch of three consecutive road games Saturday at Indiana State.

SEMO picks former Rice coach for assistant job

New 9.24.08

Former Rice and Chicago State head coach Tommy Suitts has taken a role on Scott Edgar's staff as an assistant coach.

Suitts, an assistant coach at Alabama and then North Alabama from 1974 to 1981, took his first job as a head coach in 1981 at Rice, but he resigned under pressure midway through the 1987 season after the team's 7-12 start. He was 63-99 with the Owls.

Suitts coached at Chicago State from 1987 to 1990 and finished with a 26-58 record.

He has coached boys and girls high school teams since 1992, most recently a boys team that finished 4-20 last season at W.S. Neal High School in Brewton, Ala.

Perryville soccer team handed first loss by ND

New 9.25.08

After seven wins in a row, Perryville's new boys varsity soccer team has experienced another first: defeat.

The first-year team was outshot 22-3 and lost 3-0 at home Thursday to defending Class 2 state champion Notre Dame.

Josh Robert scored on a penalty kick in the second half to give Notre Dame (9-1) the only goal it would need. Joda Holloway put the Bulldogs ahead 2-0, and Brock Dirnberger scored on a pass from John Unterreiner late in the game.

Herculaneum presses Dragons in upset bid

New 9.26.08

Ste. Genevieve scored back-to-back touchdowns in the second half to seal a 30-22 win over Herculaneum in the fourth quarter to highlight Friday's high school football across the region.

Herculaneum returned a third-quarter interception to take a 22-18 lead before No. 2 Ste. Genevieve rallied.

Elsewhere, Brandon Bourbon scored on a 62-yard run early in the fourth quarter, and Chaz Smith intercepted a pass less than 30 seconds later and returned 38 yards and pushed Potosi to a 24-14 comeback win over Perryville.

Two teams that went into Friday's games stayed that way: No. 4 Fredericktown turned back a fourth-quarter rally by East Prairie, and No. 10 Kennett shut out Portageville.

Southeast comeback salvages second win

New 9.27.08

Henry Harris scored from the 1-yard-line in the final minute Saturday to give Southeast a 24-21 win over Indiana State, which hasn’t won a game since 2006.

Indiana State (0-4) led 14-0 in the second quarter, but SEMO (2-3) pulled within 14-7 after Houston Lillard scored on a drive set up by Jacob McKinley's 74-yard kickoff return. The lead changed hands twice more in the second half; Doug Spada scored on a field goal and Lillard threw a touchdown pass to Miles Edwards to push the Redhawks up 17-14, and Indiana State scored on a 33-yard play with 10:46 left to make it 21-17.

Harris ran for 100 yards for SEMO. For Indiana State, the loss was the 18th in a row.

ND softball team climbs to 19-0 after Kelly showdown

New 9.29.08

Notre Dame held Kelly to no hits through the seventh inning Monday on its way to a 6-0 win and its 19th win in a row.

Lauren Reinagel pitched the one-hitter for the Bulldogs (19-0), spoiled only after Kelly's Danielle Dock singled into left field. Kelly (16-3) put runners on first and second in the inning but got no further.

For Notre Dame, Brooke Glastetter, Alecia Glaus and Alexis Ralls each had two hits.
