Local schools

Southeast Missouri is home to a four-year NCAA-affiliated university in Cape Girardeau, along with junior colleges in Farmington, Hillsboro and Poplar Bluff, all of which compete with national-calibur athletic programs and athletes.



Southeast Missouri State University

Since moving to Division I in 1991, Southeast has claimed more than three dozen regular-season OVC titles and 11 postseason titles. Seven of the school's teams have advanced to NCAA Division I postseason tournament. It is Southeast Missouri's only four-year university.

Jefferson College

Two men's sports and three women's sports compete at Jefferson College, a two-year school where volleyball coach Jo Ellen Stringer ranks among the nation's most successful junior college coaches.

Mineral Area College

MAC's four athletic programs compete in Region 16 of the NJCAA and the MCCAC Conference. The cheerleading squad is also a competitive aspect of the athletic program at the two-year college in Park Hills.

Three Rivers Community College

TRCC is a two-year school in Poplar Bluff. Its athletics program includes men's basketball, where Gene Bess is the winningest coach in junior college history with more than 1,000 victories.
